You are about to commit a distraction infraction

From the Iosco County News Herald this week: “East Tawas passes ‘distracted driving’ ordinance.”

The short version of the article: If you commit a moving violation and it is determined that you did so while being distracted, you face additional charges and fines. “Distracted” in this case is a euphemism. What it means is that the cops decide whether or not your coffee drinking ritual caused you to roll a stop sign.

Could the “Powers That Be” pile any more crap on top of the misery that is life at the moment? Seriously, as depression follows its usual chain of events, the last thing you need when you’re pulled over or involved in a fender bender is an additional fine on top of your deductible and ticket.

A courtesy to "Heartbreak" Dick

Commentary
By JULIUS MULLER

This week’s unsurprising announcement comes courtesy of none other than Dick Cheney, Evil Incarnate himself. Seems that Cheney has had another heart attack.

Now, there are a few ways you can look at this event and I guess to a certain extent it depends on whether you believe in God, Satan, Heaven, Hell and anything in between. Regardless of your belief system however, you have to acknowledge this man’s propensity for dancing with death. A proclivity, if you wish.

One approach to examining this veritable phenomenon is to think about it as divine intervention. God obviously thinks that Dick’s work here is still incomplete. Or alternatively, God has been in a foul mood for the last 5,000 years and Dick is just another way of expressing or manifesting his rage and ire towards humanity. You are aware that he does work in mysterious ways, aren’t you?

What chews on my last nerve is the fact that Dick’s refusal to just die is so characteristic of the man.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. At least that’s what I’ve been told.

I took the last few weeks off from writing to reflect and reevaluate the purpose of this column. I didn’t have to wait too long before someone totally irrelevant reminded me of that purpose in no unclear terms. Suffice it to say that I was hesitant and in two minds whether to continue at the same rate since it had been known to me that my battle was up and over an unusually steep hill.

Then, enter Joe Stack who I suppose was the bitter pill I had to swallow. Needless to say, he made my week, if not my month. If by some chance you don’t know who Joe Stack was, let me explain.

Should have, would have, could have

COMMENTARY

Members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:

In the face of reality and all that has been revealed, I can confidently declare that we are screwed. For 220 years our leaders have stood before you here, and imparted many untruths, half-truths and idealistic predictions. I shall not stoop to that level today.

What we have to deal with today is a full-scale systemic failure of government – our judicial branches, legislative branches and everything in between.

We know when and where the system began to fail. We also know why. However, of overwhelming importance, is repairing the system. And we do not have a clue where to begin. We don’t even know if it is reparable at all.

The reasons for our state of ill repair, and the inability to do anything about it, are surprisingly simple:

Where do we draw the line on corporate campaign finance contributions.By JULIUS MULLER

Staff writer

Well, it’s all over but the shouting. Last week’s Supreme Court ruling, granting corporations unlimited spending on political campaigns, means that your government is now officially for sale.

While you could make the argument that this has been the case for some time now, this ruling means that corporations will now rule with impunity rather than behind the scenes.

CommentsThis is not your mother’s America anymore. The court’s decision has several implications that were either under reported or completely ignored by the mainstream media.
