Attentive neighbors thwart Iosco County burglary
From a MSP press release
HALE – Watchful neighbors along State Road south of Hale interrupted a suspected thief’s second attempt to rob a home on Thursday. James Frederick Nichol, 31 of Ogemaw County’s Logan Township, is now sitting in jail facing four felony breaking and entering charges as well as one charge of driving on a suspended license, according to Michigan State Police at the East Tawas Post.
When a neighboring home owner, well aware the Reno Township home had already been burglarized two weeks ago, witnessed Nichol leaving the home aboard an ATV and pulling a trailer he called a second neighbor. That second, anonymous neighbor used his car to block the ATV-mounted robber’s escape. After forcing the ATV to stop, the neighbor exited his vehicle and took the keys from the ATV.
Nichol then took the keys from the neighbor’s car but it was too late. Informed by the auto’s that law enforcement were on their way, Nichols ran off into the woods, leading two police tracking dogs and teams of police on a four hour, four-mile-plus chase through the woods.
Nichol was found hiding under some brush, with burglary tools, a Michigan state identification card and the neighbor’s car keys in his possession, according to police. While the investigation continues, police say Nichol will be charged with the prior robbery as well come Monday. Meanwhile he is held on a $35,000 bond.
Michigan State Police from the East Tawas Post were assisted by a K-9 unit from Houghton Lake and the Lincoln Detachment, State Police from West Branch and Ogemaw County Sheriff’s deputies.

Big haul
From a press release
GRAYLING – A breaking and entering in Crawford County Tuesday led to the seizure of 12 pounds of marijuana and the arrest of three men, including the owner of the home broken into.
According to Crawford County Sheriff Kirk Wakefield, deputies were dispatched to a possible break in of a seasonal residence on Feb. 9. As one of the deputies approached the Frederic Township scene he observed two men walking north on US-27 carrying two large garbage bags. Before the pair could be confronted they ran into the woods.
A foot chase by both deputies resulted in the men’s capture and they were found to be in possession of a large amount of marijuana, a firearm and a safe. Deputies then returned to the residence where the homeowner admitted the marijuana was his.
All three men were arrested following the incident. Names have not been released pending arraignment.

Gladwin teens injured by homemade bomb
Press Release
From the Michigan State Police
GLADWIN – Two Gladwin County teens were injured Saturday when a pipe bomb they were constructing prematurely exploded, according to a Michigan State Police report. The boys, who found plans for the bomb on the Internet, were planning to detonate the device in a nearby cattle pasture.
The boys, ages 13 and 14, were taken to Mid Michigan Medical Center in Gladwin but transported elsewhere for advanced treatment, according to the report.
Police investigators determined the incident to be isolated and say the boys had no further plans of destruction. No evidence of additional explosives were found at the site.
The case serves as a tragic reminder of the danger of explosives, police say. Agencies assisting at the scene include the Gladwin City Police, Gladwin County Sherriff’s Department, Mid Michigan EMS and the Gladwin County Fire Department.

Christmas photo contest results
 |
| Carlee Dedafoe won the Info Northeast Christmas Photo Contest and earned herself $30 with this photo taken at her Grayling home. |
Votes are in, polls are closed and the checks are in the mail to the Info Northeast Christmas Photo Contest winners.
In the under 18-category, Carlee Dedafoe, 13, of Grayling comes in the winner, with this photo taken at her home. A student who prefers mathematics, Carlee still find time to pracitce her hobby of photography, and attends photography classes taught by Kirtland Community College photgraphy instructor Justin Ladeaux. While the eighth grader is a member of Grayling Middle School volley ball team, lets hope she continues her pursuit of photography as well. It appears as though her dog, a pit bull named Harley, serves well as a model.
In the adult category, Marvin Graves of Alger was the clear and indisputable prize winner with the only entry. A seasoned amateur photographer, Graves' expansive collection of digital photography can be viewed on Flickr, the Yahoo Internet photo site, by clicking here.
